Facts That Matter

Facts that matter:

  • The greater Lansing area is home to more than 500,000 people, the State Capitol, and Michigan State University, a major research institution.
  • MSU boasts two outstanding medical schools (the College of Human Medicine and the College of Osteopathic Medicine) and a nursing school.
  • While we have an excellent regional children’s center, not having a dedicated children’s hospital in the Greater Lansing area similar to our neighbors in Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Grand Rapids, makes it difficult to attract and retain a full spectrum of important pediatric specialists.
  • Parents often have to drive an hour or more out of the area to receive certain specialized pediatric care for their children (in such areas as infectious disease, cardiology, surgery, endocrinology, and some others) resulting in disrupted families and economic losses.
  • While our local hospital provides good care for hospitalized children, 80% of pediatric care is ambulatory – care that is provided outside of the hospital setting.
